Artist’s Statement
I work in costumes because clothing, for me, has always been the first ingredient of a dream, the reward and tools of hard work, and the ultimate framing device for a story. I believe that humans use the sartorial language of clothing like a sixth sense, and that everyone, from the fashionista to the pragmatic scholarly activist, constantly tells their own story through the garments that they wear, as well as fluently interpreting the stories of others.
In my work, I strive to be detail-oriented, looking beyond but resting on archetypal foundations. I aim to create a holistic, balanced world for performers to inhabit, grounding inventiveness and fantasy in a deeply dramaturgical understanding of the vision of my collaborators and the world of the script.
I’m drawn to colour, multiplicity of purpose, and the fantastic. I’m always searching for beauty within the mundane, where the connection between the garment, character or personality, and the needs of the performer intersect to scaffold the development of character, values, and story. Through this practice, I intend to expand the possibilities of life and play both in theatre and, occasionally, in reality.
I’m beholden to Secwepemc, Syilx, Penelakut, Cowichan, Lyackson, Chemainus, Tsawout, Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tseycum, Malahat, Halalt, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people, on whose land I was raised, live and work.
